Reciprocating Screw Element

Reciprocating screw elements are modular segmented screw units exclusively for reciprocating single-screw pin extruders. Different from conventional continuous single-screw and twin-screw components, they adopt interrupted trapezoidal flight structure. Combined with fixed barrel pins and the composite motion of screw rotation plus axial reciprocation, they realize full-area uniform mixing under low melt pressure. They are divided into four standard modules: conveying, compression, pin-slot mixing and metering pressure-stabilizing segments, which can be freely combined for filled compounds, masterbatches and heat-sensitive material modification.

  • Intermittent Broken Trapezoidal Flight Structure 
    Flights are segmented and interrupted within one screw pitch (3-cut or 4-cut standard design), forming channels for pins to pass through. The integral trapezoidal flights feature high strength and wear resistance, suitable for high-filler powder abrasion conditions.
  • Modular Split Sleeve Structure 
    All elements are sleeved independently on a hollow cooling shaft for easy disassembly and replacement. The hollow shaft allows water circulation for precise temperature control; standard types include feed conveying, compression plasticating, mixing and metering segments.
  • Precision Clearance Matching with Barrel Fixed Pins 
    Pin channels match 3/4 rows of static pins on the barrel liner. Pins fully insert into flight gaps to form an ∞ relative motion track, eliminating dead zones for material retention.
  • Customizable Pitch & Reciprocating Stroke Ratio 
    Pitch, channel depth and stroke matching ratio are customizable. Large pitches for high-capacity conveying, shallow channels for high-shear mixing, deep channels for low-shear heat-sensitive formulations
Working Principle
  • Composite Motion: Rotation + Axial Reciprocation 
    The screw completes one full axial reciprocation per revolution. Static pins shuttle through interrupted flight slots, subjecting materials to both radial shear and reciprocating axial backmixing to break simple laminar flow.
  • Full-Melt Uniform Shear Without Local Hot Spots 
    Relative sliding between pins and interrupted flights delivers even shear to all melt inside channels, instead of only a thin melt layer bearing intensive shear. Shear heat distributes evenly to avoid thermal degradation.
  • Controllable Axial Backflow Boosts Distributive Mixing 
    Reciprocating movement generates mild axial backflow. Materials are repeatedly split, folded, turned and stretched, achieving excellent distributive mixing together with mild dispersive breakdown of pigment/filler agglomerates.
  • Mutual Self-Wiping Between Pins & Flights 
    Pins continuously scrape channel bottoms and flight sides. Reciprocating motion automatically removes residual material, enabling fast color change and barrel cleaning.
  • Gradient Conveying & Stable Discharge Pressure 
    Pitch gradually reduces along the screw to compact and plasticate solids. The terminal metering segments maintain constant channel volume to stabilize melt pressure and uniform extrusion output.
