SME Screw Element

The SME element are classic distributive mixing functional components in twin-screw extrusion systems. Based on the forward conveying screw substrate, multiple reverse shallow reflux slots are machined on flight tips. While retaining forward conveying capacity, they enhance axial material exchange and distribution homogenization, serving as a core solution to improve mixing quality in melting and homogenizing zones.

  • Based on standard forward conveying screw elements, multiple reverse-inclined shallow reflux slots are machined on flight top surfaces along the axial direction.
  • With shallow slot depth and customizable slot quantity, it retains the complete spiral conveying profile with excellent flow channel continuity.
  • Rounded transition between flights and slots eliminates material retention dead corners, delivering outstanding self-wiping performance.
Working Principle
  • This element is based on a standard conveying screw element, with a number of through slots machined on the flights to connect adjacent screw channels. The slots create a leakage flow effect, promoting transverse material exchange between neighboring channels and forming local material circulation, which homogenizes the melt and enhances longitudinal distributive mixing.
  • As the slots on the flights reduce the element’s forward conveying capacity and pressure build-up capacity, they increase the material fill degree in the screw channels and extend the material residence time. The material undergoes low-intensity shear during this process, achieving uniform and mild distributive mixing.
